Use your prompts in AI tools

Last updated 27 October 2026

Open Settings, go to AI tools, and choose Add to Claude Desktop or Add to Cursor. Then restart that tool. It can now search your prompts, use them and save new ones to ThatPrompt.

This is experimental. It works on a Mac only for now, and how it works may change.

Before you start

  • ThatPrompt is in your Applications folder. If you opened it straight from the download, AI tools asks you to move it first. macOS runs it from a temporary place until you do, and AI tools couldn't find it there later.
  • You're signed in, and your account has a licence. AI tools get access through your account.

Connect an AI tool

  1. Click the ThatPrompt icon in your menu bar and choose Settings.
  2. Scroll to AI tools. When access is ready, it says On.
  3. Choose Add to Claude Desktop or Add to Cursor. ThatPrompt adds itself to that tool's MCP settings and leaves everything else there as it was. If it can't read the file, it changes nothing and tells you.
  4. Restart the tool.

For Claude Code, choose Copy Claude Code command and run it in a terminal. For any other tool that supports MCP, choose Copy config and paste it into that tool's MCP settings.

What an AI tool can do

  • Search your prompts. It finds them by title and content, ranked the way the command palette ranks them.
  • Use a prompt. It fills in any `` you give it values for. Using a prompt counts as a use, like copying it from the palette, so it ranks higher next time.
  • Offer your prompts as its own. Each saved prompt is also listed as an MCP prompt. Where the tool shows them depends on the tool.
  • Save a new prompt when you ask it to. It appears in ThatPrompt within a few seconds, even with the palette open. It can't edit or delete your prompts.

ThatPrompt doesn't need to be open for this. The AI tool starts a small program inside ThatPrompt that reads your library on your computer.

If the tool says to sign in

Access lasts up to a month at a time, and ThatPrompt renews it while it's running and you're signed in.

  • Open ThatPrompt and sign in to enable AI tool access. Sign in under Account in Settings.
  • ThatPrompt needs to renew AI tool access. Open ThatPrompt while you're online. If it shows you signed out, sign in again.
  • Your computer's clock is behind. Set the correct date and time, then try again.
  • ThatPrompt couldn't verify the licence on this computer. Sign in again under Account in Settings.

If you sign out, AI tools lose access straight away. If your session ends without you signing out, they keep it until the date AI tools shows, so you have time to sign in again.

Where your prompts go

The program inside ThatPrompt runs on your computer and reads your library there. Nothing about your prompts goes to ThatPrompt's server. When an AI tool uses a prompt, it sends the text to its own AI service, the same as anything else you type into it.
