Docs / How to
Change the keyboard shortcuts
Last updated 9 October 2026
Open Settings from the ThatPrompt icon in your menu bar or system tray, go to Shortcuts, click the shortcut you want to change, and press the new keys. It works straight away, in every app, and it's kept when you restart.
The shortcuts you can change
| Action | Default on a Mac | Default on Windows |
|---|---|---|
| Open Command Palette | ⌃⇧P (control+shift+P) | Ctrl+Shift+P |
| Save New Prompt | ⌃⇧N (control+shift+N) | Ctrl+Shift+N |
| Enhance Text | ⌃⇧E (control+shift+E) | Ctrl+Shift+E |
These three work from any app. The keys inside ThatPrompt, like Enter to use a prompt, can't be changed.
Change a shortcut
- Click the ThatPrompt icon in your menu bar (Mac) or system tray (Windows) and choose Settings.
- Scroll to Shortcuts.
- Click the shortcut you want to change. It shows Press keys…
- Press the new combination. To give up and keep the old one, press Esc.
You can do the same on the shortcuts step of setup, before you've finished installing.
When a shortcut isn't accepted
ThatPrompt tells you why and keeps your previous shortcut working:
- No modifier key. A shortcut needs at least one of Ctrl, Cmd, Option/Alt or Shift, otherwise it would fire every time you typed that letter.
- Already used by another ThatPrompt action. Each action needs its own combination.
- Your system or another app already uses it. Pick a different combination. This is the usual reason a shortcut "does nothing" after you set it somewhere else.
Go back to the defaults
In Settings, under Shortcuts, choose Restore defaults. All three go back to the table above.
