Docs / How to
Back up and restore your prompts
Last updated 9 October 2026
Your prompts live only on your computer. To back them up, open Settings, choose Export under Data, and save the file somewhere safe. To restore them, choose Import and pick that file. It's a plain Markdown file you can open in any text editor.
Export
- Click the ThatPrompt icon in your menu bar or system tray and choose Settings. Or click the gear at the bottom of the command palette.
- Under Data, choose Export.
- Choose Export to Markdown.
- Pick where to save it. The file is named like
thatprompt-export-2026-10-08.md.
You'll see Exported successfully.
Export every so often, and keep the file somewhere that's backed up, like a cloud drive. ThatPrompt doesn't back up your prompts for you.
What's in the file
Every prompt, with its title, its folder and its text. Each starts with # Title, then Folder: name if it has one, then the prompt. Prompts are separated by ---.
What isn't in it: how often you used each prompt and when, and folders with no prompts in them. After an import, prompts start with no usage history, so the ranking learns again from what you use.
Import
- Open Settings and choose Import under Data.
- Choose what happens when a prompt in the file already exists in your library, meaning the same title and the same text:
- Skip duplicates keeps the one you have. This is the default, and the safe choice for restoring a backup.
- Replace existing updates the one you have, for example to move it to the folder named in the file.
- Import as new adds a second copy.
- Choose Import from Markdown and pick the file.
ThatPrompt tells you how many prompts and folders it imported, replaced or skipped. Importing adds to your library. It never deletes anything.
Things to know
- You can write the file by hand. Any
.mdfile in the same shape imports, so you can bring prompts in from elsewhere: a# Titleline, an optionalFolder:line, then the text. - A line with only
---in a prompt splits it into two on import, because that's the separator. Change it to something else before you import. - Moving to a new computer? See Use ThatPrompt on a second computer.
- Locked out by your licence? The Licence screen has Export my prompts, so your library is never stuck.
