Docs / Getting started
First run
Last updated 9 October 2026
The first time you open ThatPrompt, setup walks you through signing in, choosing a model and trying Enhance. It takes a few minutes, most of it the model download, and it needs an internet connection. After that, ThatPrompt hides in your menu bar or system tray until you call it.
The steps
- Welcome to ThatPrompt. Choose Get Started.
- Your Shortcuts. The three shortcuts that work from any app. Click one to change it now, or later in Settings. See Change the keyboard shortcuts.
- Good to Know. ThatPrompt lives in the system tray. You can also turn on Launch on startup here.
- Help us improve ThatPrompt. Choose whether to share anonymous usage data. It's off unless you turn it on, and it never includes your prompts. See Turn usage analytics on or off.
- Sign in. Choose Sign in or Create account. Your browser opens, you sign in there, and it hands you back to ThatPrompt. Bought on the website already? Your account exists. Check your email for the link to set your password, then sign in.
- Licence. If your account has a licence, this step passes by itself. If not, choose Buy on thatprompt.ai, pay with the same email you signed in with, and choose Check again.
- Accessibility Permission (Mac only). Choose Grant Permission and turn ThatPrompt on in the System Settings window that opens. ThatPrompt needs it to read the text you select and paste prompts into other apps. Setup moves on by itself once it's granted.
- Pick a local model. ThatPrompt recommends the most capable model your computer can run. Choose Install and wait for the download. See Models and system requirements.
- Now, try it yourself! Select the example text and press the Enhance shortcut. Choose Got it, let's try! to finish.
Skipping and coming back
The first three steps have a Skip link. The rest need an answer, because ThatPrompt can't work without them. Usage analytics is the exception in spirit: you have to answer, but "no" is a fine answer.
Closing the window with the × doesn't lose your progress. Click the ThatPrompt icon in the menu bar or tray and setup carries on where you left it.
To see setup again later, choose Replay Onboarding from the tray menu.
When setup is done
The window hides and ThatPrompt waits in the menu bar or tray. Press Ctrl+Shift+P to open it from any app (⌃⇧P on a Mac). Next: Save your first prompt.
